Writing within the world of STEM and academia has always felt like it was locked in a bubble to me. We, as researchers, are taught each and every step of literature, from accessing it properly, to the correct way to reading it, down to how our work should be read to each other. It's rigid format, stiff language, and inaccessible links, therefore makes this genre more than just hard for the usual audience to access: you must seek it to read it. 

Using the theory of digital ecology, though, it becomes apparent that algorithms do play a heavy part into HOW we access, find and accept these works into our own papers. See, citations are a source, not unlike Google or Safari, which contain the routing for primary sources. This inspiration sparks the debating, conversation and researching circle which goes round and round for days (months, years, eon, please it feels like it never ends) until you yourself have written a source with a citation list. The end result is a collection inspired by a collection. The original source could be sought from a journal publication itself, some light reading if you will, a mentor, where ever it came from the end result is a publication you have mimicked with your own changes to add your own improvements to the feild.

  1. This is a good map of the literature review ecosystem. It's also a nice map of the writing process for a literature review. Good point that primary research becomes secondary and then, through someone else's literature review, part of primary research again.
